Knowing More About Obesity

Overweight children have a higher risk of developing serious ailments such as asthma, high blood pressure, premature puberty, and diabetes. Obesity can also increase the risk of cancer. The health risks for overweight children are higher because of their improper diets.

Some parents blame their children’s health problems on fast-food restaurants. But the truth is that parents are a major cause of these issues. It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure their children make healthy choices and get the right nutrition. There are several ways that parents can teach their kids to stay fit and healthy.

Know your child’s condition.  Parents sometimes make excuses for their children, unable to accept that they are overweight. One way to keep in touch with reality is to consult your physician. Your family doctor can tell you whether your child falls within the normal body mass index for your child’s age and body mass.

Make a good example.  Children mimic the behavior of their parents and other family members. If you want them to eat healthy food, then the diet of the whole family should do the same. This will help your kids learn which food they should eat, such as fruits, vegetables, and foods high in vitamins and minerals.

One major factor that leads to obesity is a high intake of sweets and foods high in fat and cholesterol. The best way to keep kids from eating too much of these foods is to clean up the refrigerator and the cabinets. Remove or hide the unhealthy foods and stock up on low-fat and sugar-free foods. This will keep the kids away from temptation and learn to treat these foods as occasional indulgences.

Be aware of what you buy. Parent should be conscious of the nutritional value of the foods they prepare. Measure everything you serve to your children to avoid over-indulgence of foods that can disintegrate their health.

Be patient. Children are normally picky with their food, but you should not stop introducing new foods.

Always set a time for eating. Parents are often lenient when it comes to meal time. They want to let their kids eat anytime they want. Children need some discipline and structure for meal times. They should not be allowed to eat anything at anytime they want. It is the parents’ responsibility to emphasize that there is a time for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and reasonable snacks.

Most importantly, the parents should engage their children in physical activity. Exercise will help keep your children’s weight at a normal level, but it will also help maintain normal physical development.
